What is ‘Ikigai’?

Ikigai (pronounced ee-kee-guy) is a Japanese concept that means ‘reason for being’. It’s the spark that gives our life meaning, the quiet joy that makes us feel alive, and the deep sense of purpose that helps us get out of bed each morning.

It’s not ‘just’ about our job – it’s about what we’re made for.

It’s not about being busy – it’s about being aligned.

It’s not about chasing success or perfection – it’s about finding fulfilment in the everyday.

Where does the word ‘Ikigai’ come from?

The term comes from Japan, combining ‘iki’ (life) and ‘gai’ (worth or value). It’s deeply rooted in Okinawan culture, where people live long, vibrant lives – often credited to their strong sense of purpose and community.

How do we find our ‘Ikigai’?

Finding our Ikigai is a journey. And here’s a simple roadmap to guide us.

The four elements of Ikigai are:

  1. What we love – What brings us joy, lifts us up and makes time fly

  2. What we’re good at – Our strengths, talents and natural gifts

  3. What the world needs – Ways we can contribute, help or inspire others

  4. What we can be paid for – Especially important to align career and purpose

Our ‘Ikigai’ lives in the overlap of these four circles. We can sketch them out, journal our answers or simply reflect. It’s okay if it changes over time – Ikigai is fluid, like us.

What impact does Ikigai have on our life and wellbeing?

Discovering our Ikigai brings:

  • Clarity – We know what matters most

  • Motivation – We wake up with purpose

  • Resilience – We bounce back more easily from setbacks

  • Joy – Even small moments feel meaningful

Ikigai gives us a reason to care, connect and grow. It’s the heartbeat of a fulfilling life.

Ikigai at work

In today’s face-paced world, many people feel disconnected from their work – burnt out, disengaged or simply going through the motions. That’s where our Ikigai plays a very important role – offering a powerful framework for aligning our career with our deeper purpose. If we feel connected to our Ikigai, we’re more likely to thrive, collaborate and innovate.

When all four elements of the Ikigai align, work becomes a source of joy and vitality.

So…What are you made for?

Maybe it’s teaching. Creating. Caring. Exploring. Maybe it’s helping others feel seen. Or bringing beauty to the world.

Your reason for being is already within YOU.
